Item Decay

The landscape of Atys is completely organic, far removed from the planet's mineral core. As a result all items on Atys are inclined to degrade with time and with use.

The perpetual need to renew items is a central motor for the crafting and foraging systems. The rate of item degradation is designed to coincide with the development rate of characters. As they 'outgrow' their items and move on to higher level kit, the old items approach the end of their useful lives. As such they are of little use to lower level characters coming up through the game. This ensures that the need for low level items persists and that the skills of up and coming crafters are of value to their peers.

The only type of item not to degrade in Ryzom is dapper (money). The currency in Ryzom is a magical substance that is used in item enchantment, teleportation, resuscitation, banners, quest objects and a couple of outpost rewards.
